Best movie rental place in Logan

...if you can find what you are looking for.

Since I work downtown it is really convenient that Books of Yesterday is now also home to Top 10 Video...which was across the street at AMC...which was previously in the basement of The Book Table...which was previously in Top 10 Video, where Books of Yesterday is now but about 15 years ago.

Top 10 has a HUGE selection of VHS videos and a lot of newer DVDs. They have a large foreign film selection which is where Mike and I go to get our Kurosawa and Miyazaki fixes. The best part is that all the "library" rentals are only a dollar and you can keep them for full 7 days. The new releases are a little bit more and you don't get to keep them as long but still a very good deal.

My only complaint is that it seems like proper alphabetizing is optional. I have tried several times to find the movie "Spaced Invaders". It is supposed to be in the VHS Comedy section and I cannot find it anywhere in that area. While looking in that section and others I've found a lot of movies in the completely wrong section or under the wrong letter grouping. Maybe its just rude customers that pick them up and put them back in the wrong place but it just bugs the heck out of me.

Halloween Movies

My brother Rob is getting married next Saturday. We are having a rehearsal dinner a week from tonight. My brother Dave and his family are coming home for the wedding and so since all the nieces nephews will be in town that weekend I've decided to have another kids movie night at my house. So...

This probably isn't going to be a sleep over because the kids and grown ups need to get ready for the wedding the next day...BUT, if the parents think its ok we can have it as a sleep over, no problem.

I've been trying to find good halloween movies for kids that range age from 2 to 18, fun ones but not TOO scarey. This is the list so far:

If you are one of the Hickman grandkids or their parents and you want to vote for or veto any of the movies on the list let me know. Also let me know if there are any movies that would be good that I have forgotten. I think I'm going to narrow it down to 2 (or 3 if they are short).

As usual any and all Hickman family grown ups are welcome to come or you can just drop your kids off and have a date night.

Caramel Apples

Ahhh conference weekend. I love General Conference but I have trouble staying awake if I just sit on the couch and try to listen...I have to keep my hands busy and since I have failed spectacularly at knitting and crocheting (and I don't have the living room space for quilting), I decided to make caramel apples.

It is fun to surprise people with an unexpected treat on a chilly saturday evening. I was so excited to share them that I forgot to take a photo until after I'd given them all away. Compared to the gorgeous food blogs I subscribe too, my food posts rate an Epic Fail.

This recipe is one that I got from my mother. She learned candy making from her sister who learned it at the Bluebird candy company here in Logan, UT.

I learned candy making from my mother. Her chocolates look great and taste great...mine look awful but taste great so I've completely given up on making them pretty. This recipe is really simple it just takes time and patience to do it right.

A note on the caramel recipe: If you are making this caramel to use as an ice cream topping or for dipping fruit in it, only cook it to 220. If you are making it to use as a coating for fruit or desserts, only cook it to 230 and work with it fast because it sets up as it cools.

Best Darned Carmel Ever!

2 cups cream (1 pint = 2 cups)
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups karo syrup
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. Vanilla (pony up and use REAL extract, it tastes better)

Butter the sides of a 4-quart saucepan. In it combine sugar, karo, butter and 1/2 of the cream; bring to a boil over low heat, stirring every few minutes (don't cheat and try to speed up the boil by raising the heat, it will ruin the final product).

Slowly stir in the remaining cream and salt. Cook over low heat to medium-ball stage (235°), stirring almost constantly toward the end. Remove from heat; add vanilla. Pour into buttered pan. Cut when cold. Wrap (use parchment paper, NOT wax paper) and store in airtight container.

If you want to make caramel apples follow the recipe above but only cook to 230. While the caramel is cooking cover 2 jelly roll pans in powder sugar, crushed nuts, sprinkles, crushed candy, or crushed cookies...whatever floats your boat. Wash and dry 2 dozen apples, I like jonathans because their tartness is a great compliment to the caramel but you can use whatever apples you have on hand. Insert popcicle sticks into the apples, right next to the stem (if you leave the stems on the apples last longer). After you remove the caramel from heat quickly dip the apples, allowing extra caramel to drain off into the pan, placing the apples firmly into the sugar/nuts/candy/sprinkles/cookies on the pan. Let them set up for about 15 minutes and then transfer them to cupcake papers.
