Sore Throat Season

Once again fall moves aside and winter takes center stage, with a chorus of coughing and sneezing to back it up. Sore throat season is upon us. Everyone has their favorite tricks and home remedies, this is mine.

When I was little our family doctor swore by concord grape juice for sore throats. So as soon as any of us started to get sick my mom would break out her home bottled concord grape juice. It always seemed to work. No, we didn't miraculously get cured over night, but it really helped ease the pain of a sore throat, without the patient oozing menthol fumes.

There was one problem with this remedy though...it was sweet, really REALLY sweet. So after a little research and experimenting over the years I developed my own slightly more palatable remedy based on concord grape juice.

Concord Grape Juice Sore Throat Ease

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of 100% concord grape juice

  • 1 cup sprite

  • 2 TBSP honey

  • juice from 1 lemon

  • pinch of cayenne pepper
Strain the grape juice and then place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high for about 30 seconds. Serve over ice for a cooling treat or pour into a sauce pan and heat up for a warm nightcap.

I usually make up a couple batches and put them in convenient nalgene type bottles and keep them in the fridge for several weeks. Then if either of us needs one we can grab one and take it with us any where we need to go.
