Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3, Testing

I volunteered to be a recipe tester for Irvin Lin's soon to be published cookbook, "Marbled, Swirled, and Layered".  I've followed his blog, eatthelove.com, for a while now and was excited to try out some of his new recipes.

Saturday evening the first recipe to be tested arrived in my inbox and I immediately went shopping for a couple of ingredients that I didn't have in my house.  By midnight the cake was frosted and ready to serve.  Sunday evening I invited some friends over to try it out and give their opinions.

I'd tell you what the cake was, but then I'd have to kill you, so you'll just have to wait until the cookbook comes out.  Here are a few photos of the cake.

This photo was taken at midnight, then edited at 2am when I couldn't sleep.  Note to self, don't edit stuff at 2am.

Morty's Cafe: Trivia Night

Morty's Cafe is a fairly recent addition to the Logan food scene.  The cafe is located on Darwin Ave on the USU campus.  The dining room is small but in warmer weather there is an excellent 2nd floor patio that diners can enjoy.  The menu features gourmet burgers, quinoa bowls, baked goods, and shakes in addition to the regular burger restaurant trappings (fries, onion rings, sodas, etc).

I've tried several of their burgers and have enjoyed them all, but am particularly fond of the Sunnyside, Kimchi, and Hawaiian burgers (pineapple AND jalepenos, yes please!).  In addition to the regular menu they introduce a special item of the month each month.  Last month they featured the Morty's Gras, which was a pulled pork sandwich with house made coleslaw on top.

Tuesday nights at Morty's are Trivia Nights.  Hosted in the beloved pub quiz format, these nights have steadily grown in popularity.  I consider myself decent at trivia games, but I've discovered that my friend Shari is Mensa level when it comes to dominating at quiz night.  Including our win tonight Shari has won a total of 3 times, once in individual competition and twice with teams.  Our team names have varied from MLT to Rocky vs The Russian.  After tonight I believe we're changing our name to The Ken Jennings.  We'd like to say "Good game" and "sorry, we get a little over-enthusiatic sometimes" to all the other teams, and thanks to Team Flying V for giving us a run for our money, we'll always have Cork.

Here is a photographic account of Trivia Night tonight.  If you feel like taking on team The Ken Jennings (and if you enjoy losing) feel free to challenge us next week, Tuesday night, at 7:30pm, and bring your A game.

Wrong answers to the question: "A kitchen tool with the same name as an instrument in the lute family..."

Hint: It's not a spoon.
Hint: It's not a ladle.  Although these answers combined brought to mind a funny therapy scene from the movie 28 Days.

The end.

Sad day in Logan

Crumb Brothers is closing for business at the end of the month.  I'm really, really depressed about this.  Here is their announcement from their facebook page.

Good Morning ~
Dear Friends
By the end of this week, you will see our ad in the newspaper announcing the closing of Crumb Brothers Artisan Bread and Cafe on March 28. Bill and I are sending out this advance notice to treasured friends and customers of Crumb Brothers.
With respect to the 13 wonderful years at Crumb Brothers, plus our great fortune to share our love of food and books with the community since 1988, we are ready to close our last chapter as business owners. We remain passionate about our love of good food, great books and fine company. But we are now committed to turning our passions toward a more private domain and relishing often-neglected relationships with friends and family.
We have bought the proverbial sailboat to set off on new adventures. Only our sailboat is a new (wonderful) SUV and our adventures largely land-based! Mostly we are retiring from business in order to: stay home, travel a bit, enjoy friends, relish this community and look for new ways to express our commitment to a sustainable lifestyle.
We cannot thank you all enough for supporting us in our business ventures. We love this community. Now onto the next chapter...

"To Infinity and Beyond."
Love,
Diane and Bill
